Overview
MetaMask is a browser extension wallet that allows users to interact with Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks. It securely stores private keys locally in your browser and facilitates sending, receiving, and interacting with decentralized applications (dApps).
Installing MetaMask
- Visit the official website at MetaMask.io to download the extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Brave.
- Add the extension to your browser and confirm permissions.
- Click the MetaMask icon in your browser toolbar to start setup.
Creating a New Wallet
- Choose "Create a Wallet" and set a strong password for your local MetaMask extension.
- MetaMask will generate a 12-word seed phrase. Write this down offline; it is the only way to recover your wallet if the device/browser is lost or reset.
- Confirm your seed phrase by selecting the words in the correct order.
- Once confirmed, your MetaMask wallet is ready to use.
Using MetaMask Extension
After setup, you can:
- View your wallet balance and transaction history.
- Send and receive ETH or tokens by entering a recipient address.
- Connect to decentralized applications by clicking "Connect Wallet" on the dApp site.
- Switch networks (Ethereum mainnet, testnets, or custom networks).
Security Best Practices
- Never share your seed phrase or private keys online. MetaMask staff or dApps will never ask for it.
- Store your seed phrase securely offline; consider multiple copies in secure locations.
- Only install MetaMask from official sources and keep your browser updated.
- Enable hardware wallet integration (Ledger or Trezor) for enhanced security if desired.
Backup and Recovery
If your device or browser profile is lost, you can recover your wallet using your 12-word seed phrase. Enter it on the MetaMask extension to restore access to your funds.
Troubleshooting
- If the extension fails to load, try refreshing the browser or reinstalling from the official site.
- For connection issues with dApps, ensure you are on the correct network and that MetaMask is unlocked.
- Do not enter your seed phrase into any website or app other than MetaMask extension recovery prompt.
